Chapter Nine

I SAT at the table set for two in the dining room. Drew and Angelo had decided to eat together in their room. Claw was away, probably at some meeting of team leaders.

“This is like a date, right?” Ginger whispered as he leaned against the doorframe. His gaze roamed over the two sets of plates, the glasses, and lingered on the candles I’d added on impulse.

“Too much?” I asked, looking at him from the corner of my eye.

“Never too much, baby.”

He sashayed toward me. The slow, sensual kiss he gave me almost made my toes curl. Gods, how I’d missed this: true human contact, this sense of connection, the tenderness that made waves of goose bumps wash over my whole body. I tightened my arms around him and pulled his masterpiece of a body as close as humanly possible.

“Spoiler alert: I’m most likely going into the sappiest and cheesiest direction possible,” I whispered.

He chuckled and put our foreheads together. “I fell for you a long time ago. It was love at first sight. I touched myself thinking about you for months. I went to sleep fantasizing about touching you and dreamed of having your taste in my mouth. Everything coming from you is the definition of perfection for me. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I’m trying to, but my thoughts are a bit mushy because you’re so close,” I admitted with a hint of embarrassment. “You’re in love with me?”

“Definitely.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m so obsessed with you that any sane person would run like hell from me right about now. I’m hoping you’re just crazy enough to stick around, though.”

“I’d be crazy to let you go. I am a proven moron for staying away from you for this long, but I’m not that out of my mind that I’d let you slip away. I’ll never let you slip away from me now.”

He nibbled on my earlobe. “Are we talking some restraints at some point, maybe?”

“I’m going to end up with a permanent boner around you.”

“Perfect. I want to get under your skin so deeply that we’ll fuse together.”

I stepped back to look into his eyes. “How can you be so brave at such a young age?”

“I adored my parents. Losing them devastated me. My aunt wasn’t the warm and fuzzy type. I kept looking for affection in all the wrong places for a few years. Then I understood that what I needed wasn’t in just any random guy’s company. When I first looked into your eyes, I simply knew you were it for me. I could see it as clearly as I can see you now, standing in front of me. I’ve been looking for a home, and you’re going to be it for me. And I think you’ve been yearning for that too. I want to give you everything you could ever hope to get from a relationship. I’ll do everything in my power to show you just how perfect I know we can be for each other.”

“And you see it all so clear?”

“I do.
