There was still the matter of fuel for the furnace and the tipping when we stalked.

‘The dwarves will find a way to smelt and mold,’ Red Beard reassured me. ‘We are smiths as well as miners. We know how to keep a foundry running and manage tremors in the ground below.’

I allowed myself to believe in him. It was a big relief, actually. And I was happy. And above all, my dream of my creations leaving my sphere of influence would be fulfilled.

‘Your ancestors will be honored to allow their armor to once again shelter the creatures of the light from this terrible peril, I hope,’ I said.

‘Yes,’ said Red Beard. ‘It will be their honor.’

‘Then it shall be achieved, if at all possible,’ I vowed.

‘All that remains now, then, is to get the dwarf wives to kit out the warriors.’ He scratched his beard. ‘Right,’ he said as if thinking aloud. ‘At the end of the armor manufacturing process, we will get a locksmith to attach all the buckles, loops, and fastenings… but the armor will need a linen lining with padding at the joints and rub places, where they have to be attached...’

The delegation of dwarves left the boss room chatting, planning, excited, and happier than I had ever known them.
