‘Poor Judas,’ Judith stammered. ‘Poor, poor Judas...’ She rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand, clearly upset by what she had read. ‘And all the sorrows of my ancestors, the pain suffered by all the generations that came before me, all the persecution and murder, it was all because ... because the wrong story was passed down. The Jews had nothing at all to do with Jesus’ death. The Romans killed him.’ She sighed heavily.

‘I understand now why some people would go to any lengths,’ Peter said, ‘to stop this being revealed to the public. It’s so easy to imagine them going to the wrong tomb, still in shock at what had happened, and how their hopes would have soared when it was empty. You can understand them wanting to pass that same hope on to future generations. You can see them telling themselves that their rabbi hadn’t died, after all, feeling his presence almost tangibly when they were together. It’s all so easy to imagine, so understandable so...’

‘Logical,’ Judith said. She sighed again. ‘This is heartbreaking, truly heartbreaking. We just can’t keep this to ourselves.’

She turned the page.
