Raine drove the jeep across the Warren bridge and gunned it up the steep switchbacks on the far side, the memory of the last few hours still tingling through his body. Interrogating their two unexpected allies had given him a rare chance to spend time with Jac again... but he knew it would be their last opportunity for a while.

Focus on what you have to get done.

He parked by the house and turned to Dylan and Carey.

“You can uncover your eyes.”

He watched their reactions as they pulled off their blindfolds and looked around, blinking in the sudden burst of sunlight. There was no need for psych-training to read their faces. Arriving in front of a large rambling farmhouse in the middle of a dense forest was not what they had anticipated at the end of their mission. They must have expected the man they had been told had taken control of the entire country to be in some grand building in the city, surrounded by his army.

Pendrac was waiting in the great hall, standing at one of the oak tables near the big stone fireplace. Sunlight filtered through the windows, illuminating a careless patchwork across the maps and plans spread across the broad scrubbed surface.

Raine noticed the lines of tension on his commander’s sun-weathered face that the dark close-cropped beard did not completely disguise. Concealing the strain, keeping up morale, was one of the first things he had learned from Pendrac. Which was why he knew how to see through the outward show of calm confidence.

He handed over Dylan’s tablet by way of explaining why they had come. The Resistance leader scanned the first few pages before looking up at the newcomers.

“How did you get this?”

It was Carey who answered. “The rebellion has a couple of people inside the Avarit security forces over there. Only medium grade positions, but they get useful stuff. It’s how we heard––well, we thought––you were in control of the capital.”

She looked around the oak-beamed room with its tall windows and patched lime plastered walls.

Hardly the seat of power for a president.

Raine could tell they still had not made any sense of the disparity between the briefing they must have received before they set off and what they were seeing now they had arrived. Not surprising, since his own knowledge of the other continents was almost non-existent. Avarit made sure to keep it that way.

Maybe it was time to share more information.

“Pendrac and I are campaigners, fighters, not politicians. Different skills. Cass was voted in as President in the recent elections. Before that she was our head of intelligence. She is the best political strategist we have––and even with that, she’s having a hard time dealing with Avarit’s dirty tricks on a daily basis.”

Carey considered this for a few moments.

“I guess that still means you’re the right people to have the plans for the Avarit invasion. Then it will be up to you to decide how much you need to pass on to your politicians.”

Pendrac had read to the end of the information on the memory capsule.
