What Grandma Rose had left out was that in addition to pain relief, her special little tea blend also knocked me out like a punch from an elite prizefighter. When my eyes opened, the living room around me was dark but for two slivers of light where the porch lanternsâ glow shone through the sidelight windows flanking the front door.
Disoriented, I rolled to my side, and my neck and shoulders reminded me of the accident. Someone had taken away the ice pack and covered me with a blanket. Theyâd even tucked a pillow from my bed under my head. I was tempted to stay there and succumb back to sleep, but knew Iâd be more comfortable in my own bed. I also really needed to use the bathroom. The last thing I remembered was petting Karma, talking with Jasmine. Then it dissolved into a familiar chatter of voices as I dozed off.
My stomach growled. Iâd fallen asleep before Matty returned with the food. Gingerly, I walked into the kitchen and checked the fridge. Sure enough, there was a Whimzeeâs bag with my name written in Sharpie on the front. I carried it with me to my room, and after a quick pit stop in the bathroom, I propped myself up against the headboard and played a TV show on my phone while I ate the cold sandwich.
It was eleven thirty when the episode ended. I felt more awake, but fog still clouded the edges of my mind, making it hard to think straight. Flipping through my phone, I found the list of action items Iâd drawn up while waiting for Jake. I needed to speak with the jogging group. Which meant, I needed to be up and ready by dawn. According to Jasmine, the group had different meeting times to work with various schedules, but the main segment ran first thing in the morning and met by the public restroom at the rest area, the same one Iâd used that morning to change into my wet suit, though thinking about it, it seemed as though it had been days ago.
Tomorrow was Monday. I had two and a halfâmaybe three-quartersâdays to find a lead in the investigation that didnât involve Valkyrie. With that in mind, I brushed my teeth, scrubbed away the tiny bits of makeup Iâd worn, and climbed back into bed, my alarm set for four thirty.
The buzzing woke me on the first ring, my mind already swimming free of dreamland before the alarm went off. Groaning at the stiff pain in my neck and shoulders, I swung my legs out of bed, turned off the alarm, and did my best to stretch without agitating my muscles further. I didnât need makeup, but I swiped on some mascara to hide my pure white lashes after I pulled my hair back in a simple ponytail. Digging through my suitcase, I found a thick fleece headband and pulled it on. The band would keep my ears warm and prevent any flyaways from getting in my face while I ranâor shuffled, as the case might be.
