I wonder why Mr. Stevens wants to see me in his office. He is a middle-aged man with poor health and anger issues, and his entire team, especially me, tend to stay out of his way. He is usually hiding in his office, playing games on his phone and ignoring the rest of us. I have been working double shifts here for two months now, and I’ve probably only seen him twice. Once when I was hired, and the other time, when I saw him duck out of his office to smoke in the parking lot across the street.

The Godfrey Hotel doesn’t allow smoking, of course. The gluten-free kale-based trophy wife crowd that comes here would lose their eyelash extensions over that. It is no wonder that Mr. Stevens sneaks out of his office to smoke and then uses cheap but heavy cologne to mask the smell.

I walk into his office after receiving a curt “come in” from my knocks. There is a lump in my throat as I push open the door. I wonder if I’m going to get fired. I never thought Fletcher to be one of those petty and vindictive types. Sure, his mother used to work for my dad, but I have always thought that he was a good guy and my brother’s best friend. After my dad’s company went under and then Fletcher went off to start his own business, I didn’t hear much from him anymore. I figured that he and my brother had a falling out because of Mark’s behavior in recent years.

Ever since we lost our money, my brother became a different person. Sure, he’s had the usual bout of teenage rebelliousness and difficulties at school when he was younger, but he has never acted like this before. He became moody and erratic. He spent the last couple of years trying to get our money back, staying out for days chasing down some business leads. Then he started to invest in a series of harebrained get-rich-quick schemes that ultimately failed. He became so bitter and paranoid that he even accused me of withholding money from him. Having him around was really doing damage to our mom’s health and my sanity. Thankfully, he left the City about a year ago and I haven’t heard from him since.

Mom and I have managed okay without him. But we have so little money saved up at this point that we are basically living hand-to-mouth. This job at the hotel is great for me since it’s hard to find places that would hire me for two shifts and juggling two separate jobs would be impossible for me to spend any time with Mom, given the hours and the commute. I am saving money, a little at a time. Once we have enough to move out of Manhattan and settle somewhere with more reasonable rent, I can look for an art teacher position!

But even that measly dream might just pop in front of me. You’d think I’m used
