Chapter Ten

Hours later, Azil sat up in the bed. Solomon was there, sleeping, looking so relaxed Azil hated to wake him.

But… Azil eyed the shadow under the door.

“Solomon,” Azil whispered, nudging Solomon in the ribs.

Solomon hummed and smacked his lips before opening one eye just a tiny bit. “Hn?”

Azil pointed at the door. “Someone is waiting out there. I can see their shadow under the door.”

Solomon yawned and stretched. He kicked off the sheet, baring his gorgeous, nude body. The scars didn’t detract from Solomon’s form. Instead, Azil thought they showed off his strength. The things the man had survived would have killed almost anyone else.

“I like the way you think of me,” Solomon said.

“Solomon! You’re up!” someone yelled from the other side of the door. “Let me in!”

Azil had never moved so fast in his life as he did when he heard a young child’s voice calling out. He was halfway dressed in under ten seconds.

“It’s locked,” Solomon pointed out, but he got up as well. “Give me a second, Rhea. I’ve got my mate in here.”

“Your what?” Rhea demanded. “No! You have us!”

“Oh. Er.” Azil stopped in the midst of putting his shirt on. “I should stay in here and let you—”

“No way,” Solomon grumbled. “She’s been full of herself lately.” Solomon leaped on the bed then off again, landing on Azil’s side. He cupped Azil’s cheek. “She’s a child who’s always been cared for and coddled. She isn’t a bad kid, but she can be challenging. She’ll love you in no time at all.” Solomon pressed his forehead to Azil’s. “Don’t let her bully or intimidate you.”

“I won’t.” I hope. Oh gods, what am I doing? Azil kept the thoughts to himself. He was more afraid of facing the little girl on the other side of the door than he had been when he’d faced the queen.

“Rhea, you’d better behave,” Solomon warned. He kissed Azil’s cheek and winked at him.

Every time Solomon did that—winked—Azil’s heart fluttered. The first time it had happened, Azil had feared he’d discovered a birth defect or something. Now he knew it was just Solomon’s effect on him.

“You don’t need a mate,” the girl said petulantly.

“Stop being such a brat,” someone else said—a boy, Azil thought.

“Don’t call me names, butthead!” Rhea exclaimed.

Azil glanced at the bed. “I bet the blankets and sheets are still warm.”

“Azil, don’t even think about it.” Solomon didn’t sound angry.

A check of his expression showed amusement.

Azil rolled his eyes. “I’m tired.”

“You’re trying to hide, and if you do that, she’ll have won the first round,” Solomon warned. “Come on. Finish getting dressed before Rhea and Dmitri get into a physical fight.”

Azil tugged his shirt down just as a loud thump sounded against the door.

“Solomon!” Dmitri wailed. “She bit me!”

“I—” Rhea didn’t finish whatever she’d intended to say.

Solomon sighed. “Bet Steven’s out there now.”

As far as Azil was concerned, that was a good thing. “He lives here too, him and his mates?”

“Yeah, of course.” Solomon strode to the door.

Azil joined him.
