‘I wish I could get that on film,’ said Hal. ‘It’s fantastic! Talk about special effects! Whoever’s responsible could name his own price in Hollywood…’

No one answered, and when he turned to see why, he realised he was almost alone.

But not quite. There was a boy there, who also seemed to be watching the gory display with interest rather then fear.

‘Yes,’ said Spooker, quite forgetting that Hal wasn’t supposed to be able to see him. ‘It was good, wasn’t it? The bit with the eyes, it reminded me of someone.’

‘Yes, I liked that bit too … but hey, who are you?’

Gloom, who had stepped back inside the door, wondered what to do. The shock must have unhinged the American director, because he was standing there talking to thin air. It wasn’t surprising. Gloom had seen some strange sights in the castle, but he’d never seen anything like tonight’s display. He cleared his throat, ‘Come away in, sir,’ he said. ‘Perhaps a wee dram would be in order.’

Hal glanced at him, irritated. ‘What?’ He looked round. ‘Now where did that kid go? Didn’t you see him? Just a little guy – he must have gone right past you… Oh, never mind.’ And he went impatiently down the stairs after the others.
