Chapter

Thirteen

We arrived panting. There was a van parked in the gravel area behind the house next to Megan’s red SUV. Two men stood on the back porch. I paused and Megan stopped with me. Mr. Mittens stood behind a tree, keeping an eye on the intruders and growling softly.

Before we stepped out of the woods and into view, I examined them. One of the men, who was short, but stockily built, scanned the yard. He had dark hair and a darker complexion, probably Hispanic. The other had his back to us. He was taller, well-built, muscular, and had white-blond hair. I froze. Scott. It had to be.

“I think the blond is Scott,” I said to Megan. “I wonder what he’s doing here.”

“Scott, the asshole?” Megan asked.

“Yeah.”

I suggest that you go back to the farm. I’ll deal with the intruders, Mr. Mitten snarled.

I couldn’t let that happen. Scott was a bastard, but he wasn’t anywhere near Sofia’s level of evil and didn’t deserve a full on Splintercat confrontation. He had no protection. He was a witch, but not one strong enough to wield magic.

“It’s OK,” I said to my cat. “I’ll go see what he wants. You guys stay here in case something is hinky.”

Megan nodded. It took a little more soothing before Mr. Mittens agreed. I stepped out of the trees and walked towards the house.

Once the other guy saw me, he elbowed Scott who turned and waved at me. I frowned. We weren’t that friendly anymore, but he had kept his word after he promised me. I wondered what he wanted.

Once I was close enough, he took a step towards me and said, “Hi, Brigid.”

“Hi,” I said warily back. “Who’s your buddy?”

Scott looked at his companion as though he’d forgotten about him. “Oh, this is Jorge, he works for me.”

Jorge nodded and held out his hand. I looked at it, but then I grasped his hand and shook it cautiously.

“What do you want, Scott?” I didn’t make any effort to keep the disdain out of my voice.

“Umm, well…” He thought for a moment. “I’m sorry my crew and I weren’t back after the thing with my cousin, but it wasn’t my fault. She forbade me to come back. I just wanted to apologize and see if you still wanted us to finish up. This is my business, and I don’t have anything to do with her anymore.”

I shook my head. I didn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. “I don’t think so. Send your final bill, and I think we don’t ever have to see one another again,” I said firmly.

Scott looked down, and I think he truly looked contrite. “I really am sorry. I let her blind me. I was stupid. I hope you can forgive me someday. I brought Jorge because I thought you might say that. He’s a good dude. He doesn’t know anything about…um…Sofia or her…dealings. So, if you don’t want me, please consider him. He’s trying to set up on his own business, and he’s a good guy.
