Chapter

Thirteen

I dumped out the coffee for the entire week. By the time the lunch date I’d promised Scott came around, I was sure I could handle it rationally. I got in the truck. We drove to town. Since it was a date, I was expecting him to take me to a sit-down restaurant, but he took me to a drive-through. I laughed.

“This is good,” I said. “Non-pretentious.”

“That’s my goal, to make you laugh and be non-pretentious.”

I laughed a little more. We gave our orders to the sign and drove up to the window. We got our food, and Scott drove over to the city park. We sat comfortably in his truck and munched our food. I felt normal, no overwhelming urges to jump him for now. It was nice, and we had a good time.

Before we left to head back, he asked if he could kiss me. Since we already had kissed before on the fateful night, and I needed to see how I would respond, I agreed and scooted across the bench seat to lean into it. His lips touched mine. They were soft and yielding, and the second we touched, my entire body lit up. Before I could lose control, I threw myself back away from him.

He looked confused. I felt bad for him. I was the worst tease ever. I apologized.

“I’m so sorry. I’m just struggling,” I said abashedly.

“It’s OK,” he said. “I remember I said we’d go slow.” He started the truck and threw me a smile.

“I do appreciate lunch,” I began. “It was fun.”

“I’m glad.”

The workers had started on the inside of the house. The third floor had been demolished and all the wreckage was hauled out. They were working on demoing the second floor. Since they were still at work, I wandered up to the second floor to check it out. They had kept some things to be reinstalled or refurbished. Pieces of crown molding were stacked neatly in the halls along with the original doors. They were solid hardwood and only required sanding and repainting. I checked the rooms. The plaster had been stripped, and the lathe was in the process of being removed. They were going to sheetrock after updating the insulation. Rough wiring had already been done by the Whelans. I wandered from room to room, imagining the finished product as based on the plans done by Isabella. As I entered the second floor sitting room, I felt a familiar pull. I reached toward the far wall and knocked out some pieces of lathe until my hand grasped a cloth bag. I pulled it out.

Why would my grandmother or father hide my magic in a wall? Wouldn’t they keep the artifacts close so they could give them to me when I reached adulthood? What had happened? Did they suspect a witch was after them? I opened the bag and dumped the contents into my hand. It was a set of three rings. The first was a turquoise ring. The next was moonstone, and the last one, diamond.
