Distracted Detectives. Saturday, April 22nd 0800hrs

I stared at the detectives, not sure whether to laugh or be offended. The silence in the lounge room grew increasingly awkward by the moment.

Eventually, I couldn’t help myself. "So let me get this straight. Your serial killer has dropped another body and instead of running down that fresh lead, you’re here questioning me? Why? Because I happened to visit the scene of a crime?"

"We are running down every possible lead," Hart replied. “You didn’t just visit the scene of the crime. You gave us a dud story about being hired by the victim’s wife when clearly, she’d never met you.”

“She’s hired me to investigate her husband’s murder,” I replied coldly. “We’ve been over this already.”

“Now, perhaps,” Gibson added. “But that wasn’t the case yesterday, was it? You might have been able to suck her into your story, but we won't be so easily manipulated."

I shook my head. "Are you out of your collective minds?”

Both detectives stared at me.

“Discard all the other reasons that this is mental and look at the killings themselves. Can you identify a single solitary reason I might have for any of this? What motive do I have for killing James Mooney or any of the others for that matter? Until I read about them in the paper, I didn’t know they existed.”

"Perhaps you’re a sociopath and you just enjoy the hunt,” Hart replied. “The killer is clearly disciplined, well trained, and growing bolder by the day. Answer the question. Where were you last night between ten and two?”

"Working a case. Where was the body found?”

“We’ll ask the questions,” Gibson replied, all pretense of friendliness gone. "Can anyone corroborate that?"

"Easily,” I replied. “I was at a client’s home in the hinterland. It was a surveillance job. I have extensive footage of the case and it just so happens that I closed it shortly after midnight. So at the time in question, I was handing over a scumbag to two of your colleagues. They’ll corroborate my story in its entirety.”

“Is that so?” Hart straightened her suit coat. “And their names?”

“Constable Fitzgibbons and his new rookie. Have a long talk with them. Perhaps they'll be able to disabuse you of this ridiculous notion that I'm involved. I'm an investigator. I'm only doing my job.”

"And we are only doing ours," Gibson replied, "running down every possible lead. No matter how tenuous it might be."

"Tenuous is the word for it,” I replied. “Speak with Fitzgibbons. If after that you want to have an intelligent discussion about who is dropping bodies in our town, I’ll be all ears. But for the time being, detectives, I have work to do.”

The detectives looked at each other. Hart rose from the lounge first.

"Stay away from our case," she said, fixing me with a stare. “We don't need your antics costing anyone else their lives.”

“As I’ve said, I’ve been engaged to solve this case. I’ll not be intimidated into idleness. You know where the door is. See yourselves out.”

Gibson nodded along.
