He also contributed to the spiritual-industrial complex by sitting on numerous boards of directors and allowing his prominent magazines to promote a religious understanding of Communism. Luce’s understanding of American history guided his prescriptions. He laid this out emphatically during a 1946 address to the Duke Divinity School. “A hundred years ago this land of ours was pervaded with a profound sense of optimism,” he began.
