Curing Cancer When Told It's Over

“We are people of action. We had to do something about it.”

Introduction

“At that point, maybe he prayed, but I am not sure he did. Most likely he prayed to die when the doctors told him he had only a few days left.” Sunitha Shyam is describing the last days of her father G.V. Shyam Sunder's battle with cancer. I ask to know a little about him. She describes that in her predominantly Brahmin community, everyone was in love with him even though most had never known a Christian. She shares, “If a thief broke into their house, the first person they call is my father. People say his smile is everything. I have never heard him disrespect anyone, the maid, the neighbour, anyone.” She can't be exaggerating; her own strikingly beautiful smile is the first thing to hit you. She continues, “My father is the nicest person you could meet—he loves animals. I have seen him save so many animals.” I can imagine. I actually witnessed her trying to save stray animals twice, hit by cars, and insist on paying the veterinary bills herself, on those two separate occasions. I ask her about his spiritual practice. Different than what I expected, she tells me, “He did not show people that he prayed, never went to church, but behind closed doors prayed using his heart.” Reflecting on his journey to success, she adds, “I believe this all counted.”

This is a story of a man from India whose example is extraordinary. He is an example of success not just for those possibly dealing with cancer or a debilitating disease. And let me clarify that in using his example, it is not my intention to present some concoction of a recipe for surviving cancer. He and his wife together now have large numbers of people seeking their support who find themselves in the same predicament of battling cancer. However, his story is one that illustrates the use of a most essential key to success each and every one of us can use when we place all expectation of hope in others and we are let down. I think we all have been there in some form and to varying degrees—through an expert, a teacher, a friend, a caregiver, a parent, a life partner, or a child. We tend to place all hope on charismatic leaders, religious or political, organizations stating a mission we passionately believe in, various establishments, and governments. This is one account of what we do and what is yet possible.
