If there is a danger with education, it is this: No amount of learning can substitute for the Spirit's power in preaching. Learning truth—whether through books, seminary classes, or online education—may fill our minds and hearts with knowledge, but only the Spirit of God can set us on fire! We must always keep our education and our pursuit of knowledge in proper perspective, and never let a degree or a title puff us up with pride. The man with a chip on his shoulder has no room for a cross on his back.

If you come to Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, you will see a sign outside my office that reminds me of the vision God placed on my heart when he called me to the seminary to teach preaching:

VISION: To advance the kingdom of God by raising up a generation of God-called, Spirit-empowered, and Christ-exalting preachers who with passion and intensity rightly divide and boldly proclaim the Word of God out of the overflow of a heart set on fire by God!
