Home for Tea:

Spencer spent a much needed quiet evening at home. After smuggling Amy out the front door, her blowing him a kiss as she headed off to spend some time with her family, he flopped on his bed and stared at the ceiling.

Time was becoming increasingly confusing and disorientating. Just a few days, weeks, months ago his biggest worries had been his homework, BattleBlast rating, and whether Amy Heartly would ever have any interest in him. Now, he felt the weight of the Galaxy bearing down on him, and it felt suffocating. Although Volaria had explained that time was relative and that the remarkable wormhole technology essentially acted as a shortcut through spacetime, it was, Spencer reflected, not something a human brain was easily able to process.

He and Amy had lived weeks aboard The Infinity now, and experienced events that no human being had ever even imagined. But meanwhile, back on Earth things had been proceeding pretty much as normal. His family, completely unaware of his extraordinary double life, carried on with the humdrum challenges of living on Earth in the twenty-first century. Mum always trying to balance working, looking after Mo and keeping things running, and Hassan, now at home pitching in and doing all he could to support everyone while searching for a new job.

The big man was always cheerful, but Spencer could see the worry in his kind eyes. These were unsettling times on Planet Earth, as the pandemic had changed people and society in ways that were not yet fully understood. Many large companies had not returned to operating as they had before the virus struck, and jobs in some sectors were becoming more and more scarce.

Spencer felt intensely frustrated that he was expected to somehow lead the Galaxy against a dangerous, violent and aggressive Zylaxxian foe, yet was powerless to help his own family in their time of need. It was just so bloody unfair!

‘Bradlii, if you are as smart as you claim to be…’

‘Yes, I can confirm I am as smart as I claim to be.’ The Galaxy’s smuggest AI responded without a shred of modesty.

‘Right, well then you need to help me to help my family. I am risking my life for everyone, and right here, right now my mum, my brother and my step-dad are in trouble. Yet you tell me I am powerless to help?’

Bradlii was silent, but Spencer was getting increasingly angry. ‘Hassan needs a job. He isn’t looking for charity or free handouts. He’s always worked damned hard. But I can see that he and mum are worried that they are going to have no money soon, and I am struggling to concentrate on saving the Galaxy while I am also worrying about how my family are going to pay their bills.’

‘Oh, it’s money that you are primarily concerned about?’ Bradlii asked, and Spencer detected a note of surprise in his synthesised voice.

‘Well, yes, of course. Everyone needs money to live, and my family doesn’t need lots, but they do need to be able to feed us, clothe us, and pay the rent.
