CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Charlotte stopped and looked around, watching as the frost spread across the floor in the immediate area. She was about to say something to Sir Thomas when it began to recede again. Her brows furrowed as confusion took her.
What is going on? she wondered to herself.
When it completely dissipated, she quickly made her way to the customer service counter, which sheâd seen at the front of the store when theyâd first entered.
âHello!â she greeted the woman across the counter. âThe large black dog outside is mine. Is there a problem?â
The woman, who Charlotte now realized was more than likely a teenage girl, looked almost bored.
âYeah, dogs are supposed to be leashed at all times.â Even her voice sounded bored. âHeâs a big, scary dog. Leaving him out there is dangerous.â
A low growl came from Sir Thomas, and Charlotte scratched under his chin to quiet him. She couldnât see him scowling at her efforts to calm him due to the wide brim of his hat, but it was there all the same. He wasnât a fan of someone saying Cat was dangerous.
âI assure you that Cat is a perfectly well-behaved boy. We told him to sit quietly outside since animals arenât allowed inside.â The girl looked down at the cat dressed in boots, a hat, and an oddly situated sword in the seat of the cart. Charlotte giggled nervously. âUh, right. This is my emotional support cat. I like to dress him up. This is his favorite outfit.â
The girlâs eyes narrowed further. âRiiight.â
Charlotte offered another beaming smile. âAs I said, we told him to stay put, and heâs a very good bâ ââ
âWe?â the girl questioned as she looked from Charlotte down to Sir Thomas and back again, her expression turning concerned.
Charlotte swallowed thickly before giving a dismissive wave of her hand. âAnyway, Newfoundlands are known as gentle giants in this world.â Her eyes briefly widened, and she felt just how slick her palms had become as she gripped the handle on the cart more tightly. âCountry. In this country. Forgive me. My accent is very good, but English isnât my first language,â she lied.
She cleared her throat just as she heard Sir Thomas mumble a quiet, âNice save.â
Her smile growing more nervous by the second, the fairy godmother rushed to be finished here. âAnyway, weâreâIâmâvery sorry if he seems large and scary, but that couldnât be further from the truth. Heâs a very gentle boy. Has he done anything wrong?â
There was a pregnant pause as the girl, who no doubt thought Charlotte had lost her mind, stared at her. Finally, she offered another bored-sounding statement. âNo. My manager just said heâs a public safety risk and wants him chained or taken off the property. He said, and I quote, âA dog that big could maul the absolute shit out of someone or even eat a small child in one bite.ââ
Uh oh, Charlotte thought only a heartbeat before Sir Thomas bolted upright.
âSir Thomas, donâtââ she began, but it was all ready too late.
