CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Strangely enough, in all my years of training, the possibility of being found at one of my crime scenes by a person I know and care for, never occurred to me. But again, in all my years of training, I never had to think about anyone but Daniel and myself, and he was just as prepared as me for any situation. So, it’s not a surprise that when I open the door to find João ready to knock on it, I panic.

I am not proud of my actions, but I don’t have time for anything else. Right before he can say anything, I knock him out with a calculated kick and catch his limp body mere seconds before he drops to the floor.

“I am so sorry,” I whisper.

My heart is beating faster than when I was murdering Arnoult. I try to take control over my body and my emotions to remain as calm as I can. It takes all of my strength to drape him over my shoulders and carry him outside of the building.

I try to run, but it’s impossible. João is heavier than me, and even if I can carry him, it’s a struggle going down the stairs. It feels like an eternity until we make it outside of the building, where Daniel is parked, sitting inside of a white minivan, waiting for me like we planned.

“What the fuck?” he reprimands me as soon as he notices who I am carrying with me.

“There is no time for that now, Daniel,” I warn, already getting João’s limp body into the back of the car. “Drive! The plan remains the same.”
