Chapter Seven
"Chandelle," Salena mused. "It's been a long time since I've heard someone speak her name. Grownups used to say her name to scare their children into behaving." She laughed. "I remember my mother saying 'Better be good or Chandelle will come and carryyouoffinto the woods'."
"Younever saw her?"Pascalinquired. She shook her head. "When we kids got older, we no longer believed in her. We were sure she was just made up. Do you really think all that stuff is true about her and this Mishual?"
"We need to find out." Pascal slipped off his desk and picked up the phone. "Get me Weaver," he said to Felicia.
"Right away, boss." A few seconds later, London was on the phone. "Weaver here."
"Have youfinished your assignments?"
"Almost."
"Meet youinthe parkinglot intenminutes?" "That's doable."
"I know what youdid, bythe way,"Pascalsaid. Londondidn't answer right away.
"Youstillthere?"
"Yeah, I'mhere."
"That was reallynice ofyou."
"Don't make a bigdealout ofit."
Pascallaughed. "Or take it personally?"
"Yeah, and that," London said. "Get stuffed, okay?"
"Love to."
"Dream on," London grumbled and hung up, but Pascaldetected humour inhis voice.
Fifteen minutes later, they were in Pascal's car. Salena was at the wheel, Pascal beside her, and London stretched out in the back seat. It was easier to let Salena drive since she'd already fleshed out the places Chandelle had occupied.
Just before they'd left the station, a werewolf had mauled a humaninthe park, and two lizard demons tried to break into the bank on Spectrum Avenue. Londonkept sayingit was goingto be a bitchofa night, and it certainlylooked like he was right onthe mark.
Salena turned off the main drag and rumbled down three back roads. They hit several holes, and Pascalwinced as tinyrocks flew up and hit the vehicle.
"Shit!" London yelled from the back seat. "Are youtryingto hit everyhole?"
"It's not as ifI cansee,"she muttered.
"Pascal can," London pointed out. "Can't you direct her withyour x-rayvision?"
Pascal turned to look at him and frowned. "I don't have x-rayvision."
"It's creepyas hellout here."
Salena slowed down. "We can't go much farther withthe car. The road ends here."
"You mean we have to go on foot?" London asked.
The vehicle was brought to a standstill. "Yes. We have to go through those woods there," she said, jumpingout ofthe car.
Londonclicked onhis flashlight.
"No flashlight," Salena said. "You'll scare them off."
"Oh,"Londonreplied. "How amI…?"
Pascal reached out and grabbed his sleeve. "I'll guide you."
"Brilliant."Londonwrenched his armaway.
Pascalmoved his face close to London's. "Hold mysleeve or myhand, your choice."
Londonclutched his arm. "Go ahead."
They entered the brush. Salena led the way. There were trees oneither side ofthem, and Pascalsaw many creatures hiding in the woods. London stumbled along beside him. It was probably better that London couldn't see what he saw—a colony of miniature wood nymphs with hostile expressions, fairies fluttering together inlittle groups, allmanner ofdemons who were too hideous to show themselves inthe light ofday.
Salena put up a hand suddenly. "Wait. Stay here. There's someone I cantalk to."
"Staywhere?"Londonwhispered.
"Shush,"Pascaltold London, holding on to him. Around them the trees created a cocoon of green. Shadows and various sounds and smells invaded Pascal's senses. If he let it, it could completely overpower him. He was ever aware of London beside him, and it aggravated the ache that was growing inside of him.
