MEETING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS
Handicapped children, children who score low on district tests, and children whom teachers feel need special attention for behavior or learning problems are assigned individual time. Activities are planned to provide special help in the school readiness skillsârelating to adults or other children or focusing attention on a task. Time is allotted in the morning and afternoon for 15 to 30 minutes of individual or small group activities. Each childâs program is individualized to meet his needs and sequenced for progress. Some children need only a closer relationship with an adult in a consistent manner to blossom forth and share what they already know. Children who have experienced failure for whatever reasons need time and nonthreatening situations in order to develop trust in themselves and others.
Activity centers, individual time, lunch, and naps constitute the structured part of the day. During the rest of the day children are free to make their own choices, including the choice of being by themselves and doing ânothing.â Every adult reserves some time to be free of other people or activities to maintain his or her peace of mind. We should not deny this right to children; overstimulation can be as harmful as understimulation.
The daily schedule looks like this:
7:30â10:00
Free Play. Children may choose from among different games, manipulative toys, books, block play, outdoor play, and art and science activities. A breakfast snack is available during this time.
