When he approached the table, Christina was too busy looking down at her watch to notice him. “I would never stand you up,” he said smiling at the sight of her. Startled, she looked up, and their eyes met.

“Ha, ha, you caught me,” she said reciprocating the smile. “I wasn’t checking for you though. I was just seeing what time it was.”

“Okay. If you say so,” he said taking a seat across from her.

“I really wasn’t!” she said, attempting to convince him.

“Okay. I believe you…”

“No you do not.”

“Okay…let’s say I don’t…” he began. “Why would that matter?”

“Just because.”

“Because what, Christina?” he asked, getting lost in her eyes.

“It matters because it could potentially make me appear desperate. I would hate for that to be the perception,” she said nervously.

Gavin stared across the table at her, watching her go from confident woman, to a woman with something to prove. He appreciated the vulnerability, but was even more awestruck by her beauty.

“You look very pretty,” he complimented in an effort to lead the conversation in another direction. “Sorry I didn’t get the chance to tell you that earlier. The moment didn’t quite present itself,” he said with a slight chuckle.

“The moment, huh? Yeah…” she said, blushing and brushing the hair away that had fallen into her face. “I felt bad for you,” she admitted. “You handled yourself pretty well though. I’m sure it happens to you a lot. Thought of getting yourself a bodyguard?” she asked playfully.

“Ohhh, she’s got jokes!” he said laughing. “Do you hear her?” he said addressing the hostess who had just delivered beverages to their table.

Christina watched as the hostess’ smile spread from ear to ear. Seems even she was impressed. Christina giggled and nodded her head toward the departing woman, as a way of validating her argument. “I mean, you know…somebody to help you fight off all that estrogen you get bombarded with. I’m just sayin’.”

“Now, why would you think that I have it like that?” he said drinking from the glass of iced tea that sat before him.

Damn, she’s beautiful! He couldn’t stop looking at her. I hope she doesn’t start feeling objectified. I can’t help myself. The eyes. The lips. The smile. Damn.

He liked her personality, and she had a sense of humor too. He knew when he first locked eyes on her there was more to her than her beauty, but he had no idea that she would be such good company. Being with her was refreshing. She was natural, and seemed to flow with any topic of conversation. Impressive.

The air was thick with tension between them. There was a connection present that caused him to be less vocal, even subdued around her than was his norm. Hell, quiet wasn’t any part of his DNA.
