To understand the intersections between the servicing and enjoyment of the festival one set of observations focused on a principal route that links campsites to markets and stages and also gives access to recycling, medical care and the staff canteen. Observational studies were made along this main north–south axis exploring how crowd and servicing movement was choreographed and observing the presence of the volunteers alongside the audience. The notation identified roles: punter, crew, police, steward, doctor, fire steward, or Oxfam, Water Aid and Greenpeace. The drawing recorded the significant presence of volunteers and showed how the territorialization of areas by groups of volunteers taking care of amenities provides a sense of security, with teams of volunteers working across distinct routes, zones or visually linked triangulated areas. In the reordered tolerances of the festival landscape, hierarchies between punter and service worker, crew that would not normally be evident in society, are actively upturned and mechanisms are put in place to offer the crew and service worker privileges across the site. The studies also recorded how two stewards used a rope to choreograph pedestrian and service vehicle priority at a crossroads and manage a busy junction between the otherwise ad hoc overlapping pedestrian and vehicle networks. (Figures 13.2 and 13.3.)
