Chapter 11

Concerned father, Jacob Duncan, is my first visitor at the hospital. He informs me that my discovery of the old prohibition smuggling tunnels under the brewery has opened up a wider suspect list. He hasn’t been officially arrested, but is still a person of interest in the case. I can see the relief on his face and I would gladly break my other ankle to keep it there.

“I saw them.”

Jacob grips my hand and leans toward the bed. “Saw who?”

“Before I passed out from the pain. I had a vision.”

Jacob looks over his shoulder to make sure there aren’t any nurses camped nearby. “What did you see?”

“Two men, with flashlights, carrying a body.”

“This vision of yours didn’t happen to supply a mug shot or a name, did it?”

“Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be how my special psychic gifts work.”

Jacob gestures to the cast on my left ankle. “I’m sorry you broke your leg trying to help me, but I gotta say, I’m pretty glad you found the tunnels.”

“Me too. By the way, how did Erick find me? And for that matter, how did Pyewacket get out of the bookshop with my phone?”

My dad laughs and shakes his head. “I may not be able to speak to Isadora’s ghost, but I’d be a fool to steal her thunder!”

“Great. So you’re telling me I have to wait until I get out of this place to hear the juicy details? Speaking of . . .”

Jacob stands and runs a hand through his white-blond hair. “Let me go see what I can find out. They only kept you overnight for observation, to check for hypothermia or internal injuries.” He walks out of the hospital room and I hope he returns with good news.

I’m seriously itching to get out of here and hear Grams’ side of the story. I reach for my cell phone on the bedside table and call Silas. He doesn’t “do” texting; it’s ill-mannered. Complimentary eye roll. “Good morning, Mr. Willoughby. I was hoping you could fill me in on the rescue events yesterday.”

Silas gives a nearly identical speech to the one I heard from my father moments earlier, but promises to meet me at the bookshop after I’m released from the hospital.

“All right. I’ll call you once I’m out of this— What? No, looks like just the ankle. I know, I know. It was a stupid idea. Well, I’m sure I learned my lesson.”

After ending the call, I make a face at my phone. Rude. Why does everyone think I’m careless? I went to the burned-out building to see if I could get some additional messages, and guess what? I discovered a whole maze of underground tunnels. Seems like my gamble paid off.

The door to the room opens and my dad walks in shaking his head. In his wake are two nurses and a doctor.

“Miss Moon, we’d like to keep you for a few more hours, perhaps even one more night—”

“Let me stop you right there. I’m fine. I didn’t even fall that far, and I never lost consciousness.
