Chapter 10

AS THEY RODE THE ELEVATOR up, accompanied by Lucas’ security, he remembered that he had left the books on the table in Bernard’s room. He was still close enough that he could feel the phone’s signal, so he quickly typed out a text in his head, saying, Forgot the books, but I’ll be back for them, and sent it to the phone. A few seconds later, the signal was gone.

“Did you have fun?” Dr. Gill.

“As much fun as two kids held captive by a government agency,” Lucas said flatly.

Dr. Gill tilted his head.

“Do his parents know that he’s here?” Lucas asked.

“Of course they do.”

“You’re just saying that. You don’t know for sure.”

“Look, I just do what I’m told,” Dr. Gill replied, sounding hurt. “I don’t know everything.”

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened to a floor that Lucas’ hadn’t been on before. Kowalski and Iweala stood waiting with three other burly-looking men with sidearms. Iweala was dressed in slacks and a blouse, and her hair was done up in a neat bun; Kowalski wore track pants, a t-shirt, and running shoes, and was sweating as if he had just been working out; his blond hair stuck up wildly. He grinned when he saw Lucas.

“How are you, Lucas?” he asked. “Did you rest well?”

“Yes.”

“Great. We have something special planned for you today. Walk with me.”

He turned and strode up the hallway, and Lucas followed. Behind them came Iweala, then the full security team.

“What’s going on?” Lucas asked warily.

“Have you ever worked out?” Kowalski asked.

“I took P.E,” he replied. “Why?”

“We’re going to test your fitness today.”

“We’re going to work out?”

“Sort of. You’re going to do some activities that will test your mental fitness. They’ve been specially designed just for you.”

He walked with Kowalski to a small room with a one-way glass window. In the middle of the room was a table and chair, and on the table sat a laptop computer. Cameras hung from the ceiling in every corner of the room.

“Go ahead and take a seat,” Kowalski told him, and Lucas obeyed. The laptop was open, and the screen was black.

Iweala entered the room and stopped in front of the table, her arms folded. She looked down at Lucas with pursed lips.

“We will be testing the parameters of your abilities,” she said. “There are some experts on the other side of that glass who are here to document everything that happens in here today. All you have to do is follow their instructions. Okay?”

“What do they want me to do?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted coolly. “But, trust me, no one is here to hurt you. We only want to learn more about what you can do.”

Lucas nodded. Iweala and Kowalski left, and Lucas was alone. He sensed several desktop computers on the other side of the glass; displayed on them were documentations of his height, weight, and birthday. All the documents referred to him as “Subject 5.” He could also see himself in the room, being recorded over the cameras. He felt nervous, and his palms were sweating.
