The previous chapter identified the trends and patterns in spatial-visual priorities witnessed across the houses of the sample, but each house represents a unique manifestation of these general priorities. It is therefore useful to consider several case-studies in detail, exploring each house, its decoration, and its unique spatial-visual topography. Such an approach also permits the consideration of surviving data on the finds recovered in each house in light of the spatial-visual characteristics of the locations in which they were recovered.

A sample has therefore been selected from the larger whole (Table 5.1), chosen in order to explore the full range of house sizes and locations present in the broader study, and representing five of Schoonhoven's eight categories, three of Robinson's four categories, and covering Wallace-Hadrill's top three quartiles,1 arranged here in order from least to most complex; and smallest to largest. As acknowledged in Chapter 3, because of their structural simplicity, this study unavoidably excludes the smallest and most humble properties in Pompeii, the consideration of which will require future research.
