Rearrived on expense account this time you take the limousine to the Battle House not so much remembering the stopover in Atlanta as continuing the interior monologue you began months ago back in Lenox Terrace. But thinking, or at least reiterating, this nevertheless: Yes, homecoming is also to a place of very old fears, some mine (perhaps most of which I outgrew growing up) but mostly theirs (which mostly they did not but maybe at last are at least beginning to).

You tell yourself that you are prepared to take things as they come, after all you are on a writing assignment this time. But even before the bellhop straightens up with your bags he anticipates and allays any such misgivings as may be related to those you had pulling into Atlanta.

“Did you have a nice flight in, sir?” he says; which sounds like nothing in the world so much as: “O.K., man, don’t be coming down here getting so nervous you going to be forgetting my goddam tip now. That’s all right about all that. So you desegregated. Well, good, so act like everybody else then and lay it on me heavy. Hell, you know I’m looking out for you so remember I got a family to be taking care of. And damn man it ain’t your money no how.”
