Chapter Nine

Sam pressed the doorbell at Paige’s house. A day off was his just reward after picking up the slack from having two deputies off the duty roster, and he planned on enjoying every minute of that time. Bret being on vacation was one thing. Mike, on the other hand, deserved the pressure Sam had put on him to help out Paige. Winslow might have been on unpaid leave, but that didn’t mean he was going to enjoy a week of R&R.

Not that Mike hadn’t had the right to refuse. He could have raised a stink with the mayor and the council if he’d chosen to do so. But using the brains his mama had given him, Winslow had decided it was the better part of valor to please the boss. Karma took an extra bite out of Mike’s ego when the girlfriend du jour who’d asked him to pose for the contest dumped him in a snit over the onslaught of female attention.

Sam had laughed to himself when he’d heard that story. After learning about Paige’s date with Hampshire though, jealousy didn’t seem quite as amusing.

The door jerked open, and a red-faced Paige appeared.

“Do not ring that bell again!”

Sam recoiled at the sharp command. “Yes, ma’am. And a good morning to you too.”

She waved him inside and shut the door. “Sorry. Jess is sleeping, and I didn’t want her awake yet. She was cranky on the first go-round.”

“First go-round?” he asked, following her to the kitchen.

“We spent the night at Dana’s, which meant getting up early to get back here to bake mini-muffins for the church booth. Something I should have done last night. Anyway, Jess didn’t want to get up. It was too early. She wanted to sleep. She wanted to eat breakfast with Granddad.”

Hearing that Paige had spent the night at Dana’s house lifted his spirits enough that he risked chuckling at Jess’s transgressions. “I take it you won the battle.”

“I told her she could wear her PJs home and go back to bed for another hour, and she could see Granddad later.”

Sam plucked a muffin from the baking tin, bouncing it from hand to hand to cool it.

“Stop that. They’re for the church’s booth.”

He lifted an eyebrow. “That date with Ben Hampshire cut into your baking time?”

She froze, staring at him. “I was going to tell you.”

He pulled out two chairs at the table. “I’m ready to listen.”

Paige dropped onto the wooden chair beside him. “A while back, Ben hinted about us going out sometime. I didn’t give him a definite answer. Then he went out of town on business. By the time he came back, you’d asked me—well, me and Jess—out to dinner. When he returned this week and asked, I tried to turn him down, but I felt like I’d led him on. So I agreed. When he brought me home, I told him I was interested in someone else. Then he kissed me and asked me to give him a chance.”

Heat rose from the core of Sam’s gut, and his jaw tightened.
