Use Your Dreams to Map Your Reality

I spent a lot of time thinking about what I would do with this area. I realized that while I wanted it to be beautiful, I didn’t want it to be untouchable; I didn’t want it to be a manicured space where we couldn’t do anything. I wanted it to enrich our experience, complete our experience, be a viable part of our experience here in Hawaii.

I sat down and set aside a box that I would use to house my references for my dream board, and over the next few days I filled it with images that I clipped from design magazines I had around the house and photos I had taken while traveling. I then glued the images to a piece of cardboard from a box we had used to move dishes and pans from LA to Maui. In the upper right-hand corner, I placed island-themed images: the ocean, palm trees, thatched-roof huts. In the middle, a giant fish. In the upper left-hand corner, a farmhouse and a field of lettuce, right next to an orchard. On the bottom, more ocean, and a big silver faucet. I didn’t know why the image of the faucet had spoken to me, but the purpose of a dream board is not to know but to feel. It’s about evoking a feeling, an essence and an expression of emotion, because pictures sometimes express more fully what words strain to convey.

One thing I knew was that I was obsessing over water. I always pay attention to the quiet voice inside me. I feel as if it is my soul whispering to me — giving me clues — to move me toward realizing all that I have ever dreamed of. In this case, it was simple: I missed the water. This might sound silly, given that I was on an island surrounded by miles of ocean, with jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean. But if you consider that the property is situated three miles up a volcano, far from water sources, my yearning to be closer to a water source might make more sense. I had already designated a space for a massive swimming pool surrounded by black lava rock, and apparently I wasn’t done. I needed to have water elements incorporated around the property that would be very visible from all the different areas, not just in the main square.

The other goal had to do with the land. We were sitting on so much land, and one of the things that gave us the most pleasure — aside from the view — was the abundance of fruit-bearing trees. Picking avocados and putting them into a salad; using the silver tool our neighbor gave us to open a young coconut from the tree right in front of our bungalow and drink the water; collecting macadamia nuts from under the laden branches of the tree and smashing them open with a hammer — these activities were satisfying and nourishing, and helped us feel as if we were truly a part of where we were.
