The atmosphere in Crescent City during the day was completely opposite from the nightlife it was known for. The live music came from a soothing string quartet instead of the buoyant jazz that played in the evenings. Natural light streamed in from the countless windows leading to the patio area on the newly opened veranda.
Anastacia shifted from one foot to the other as she waited at the front entryway. Mel played with Caroline, eyes darting to the front doors every few seconds. Dominic had been buffing the edge of Mel's memorial plaque for the past fifteen minutes. Everyone had their nerves to work out.
âDominic, if you keep trying to shine that plaque up, you're going to wear a hole in it,â Anastacia reminded him. At the same time, she brushed the skirt of her sundress to smooth out the invisible wrinkles for the tenth time.
âHis fatherâs coming.â Dominic tilted his head as he looked at the frame and finally stepped away. âI didn't want it to look neglected.â
âIt doesn't. It's wonderful.â
âI had no idea he held this much of an impact,â a voice broke into the conversation.
Everyone turned to the doors where a man in a crisp suit entered. Deep crowâs feet flanked his ocean blue eyes, the color so much like his sonâs. It was easy to tell that the salt-and-pepper coloring of his hair and trimmed beard were black in his youth. The likeness between Mel and his father was so uncanny that it was unmistakable this is what Mel would have looked like in twenty years if he had lived.
âMr. Coster, thank you for coming,â Anastacia greeted, holding out her hand. âI was so happy you had time to sit down with me.â
âMy pleasure, Miss Geist.â The older man took her hand in a short handshake, holding it in both of his. âI must admit, I was waiting a bit too eagerly for your call. I wasn't expecting it to be an invite to the most extravagant and newest bar in town.â
âNow, if that ain't praise.â Dominic puffed out his chest, walking to take the man's hand after he dropped Anastacia's. Dominic shook the man's hand eagerly as his mouth stretched into his customary smile. âI was hoping I could step in at some part of this meeting to greet you personally.â
âDid my reputation precede me?â Mr. Coster chuckled at the vigorous handshake.
âThough I'm sure it's spectacular, the reputation that precedes you is your son's.â Dominic released the man's hand, motioning to the memorial plaque he had been polishing. âHe had a fantastic head on his shoulders.â
Mel stood back with Caroline and Anastacia while he studied his father's reaction. The older Coster took in the plaque and a hint of a smile crept on his features. The familiar look of pride took hold in his eyes.
âHe had no shortage of imagination,â Melâs father said.
âAnd it still lives on,â Anastacia added behind him, smiling fondly at Mel. She placed a gentle hand on Dominic's arm. âDominic, thank you for setting us up so quickly.
