It took me a while to convince Ox to get back in the Jeep. I was quite sure he was in shock or close to it. When we finally got him up, Pandora and Maggot helped wrestle him into the passenger seat. She drove and I let Maggot and Benny take the back seat. I much preferred sharing the cargo hold with a co-passenger whose various odors I could at least identify.

The trip back to the shop was blissfully quiet and uneventful. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. With everything going on, I’d forgotten to set the protection system and was less than thrilled to find Lenos and Mallis sitting in the storeroom when we arrived.

Lenos’s lip was swollen and purple, but at least the bleeding had stopped. They were both sporting angry-looking goose eggs where Ox had smacked them together. Mallis rose from his chair and stalked toward us, then stopped when he caught sight of Ox. He cocked his head, narrowed his eyes, and chuckled. “Ah, what a pity. I was so looking forward to another round of sparring, but it seems someone has already taken all the fight out of my least-favorite dwarf.”

Before I could stop him, Benny decided to open his yap. “Give it a rest, Captain Twinkle Tights. In case you can’t tell, Ox is already having kind of a craptastic day. The last thing he needs right now is for you to stand here flapping those two pruny nightcrawlers you’re trying to pass off as lips.”

Lenos shot out of his chair toward Benny, but Mallis held up a hand to stop him. “I appreciate your loyalty, Lenos, but I am perfectly capable of fighting my own battles.” Mallis moved closer to me then curled his lips into a sneer. “So, I see that you boys have made some new friends. Apparently, you forgot to tell them about me. That’s hurtful, but not as hurtful as their inevitable deaths will most likely be.”

Maggot gulped as Mallis moved in his direction before he turned and walked up to Pandora. “My, aren’t you a pretty one? You look familiar. Have we met?”

She kept her gaze on the floor and shook her head. Mallis reached out with a crooked finger and lifted her chin. “Are you sure, my dear? I may have a century or two under my belt, but I seldom forget a face.”

I closed my eyes and focused on Pandora. It only took a second to pick up on the fear and rage again. Only this time the emotions came with some shocking visuals involving excessive amounts of blood and bodies. I pulled back fast and opened my eyes to see Pandora looking at me instead of Mallis. She was glaring at me, like she somehow knew that I’d seen something she hadn’t wanted me to.

I felt my cheeks flush and looked away. Usually when I read someone all I get is a sense, or feel, for whatever emotion is dominant at that moment. It’s extremely rare for
