Here rests the core political faith of the modern-day Democratic progressive: discovering the public good by taking the advice of the expert.

He has pocketed the 1912 Democratic nomination for president. The Grand Old Party has split down the middle between the traditional Republicans who maintain their loyalty to business and the new progressives. Statistically, therefore, the Democrats have a practical shot at capturing the White House for the first time in twenty years. He has sorted out the big internal squabbles of his staff; the sums to finance his drive will be handsome, and they will be clean as well.

Technically, therefore, he is in good shape.
