CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
Reece hesitated before stepping into the room. When he arrived heâd been ready to rush into the ICU, scoop Charlotte into his arms and never let her go, but after hearing what the doctor had to say he wasnât even sure if he could hold it together long enough to step through the open door. He swallowed hard, the tangle of nerves lodged in his gut causing a rolling wave of nausea, and glanced at Dr. Benson standing beside him. This was going to be harder than he thought.
Orianaâs words echoed inside his head. Had this been the gift she promised? Had she freed Charlotte? He let the thought go. Nothing else mattered now except getting his beautiful bride-to-be back on her feet. They had her son to raise.
He inhaled a deep breath into his constricted lungs and walked into the glass cubicle. Hot tears stung his eyes when he saw how pale and fragile Charlotte looked lying in the bed with plastic tubes everywhere, the heart monitor beeping its rhythmic beat. He blinked and watched her before approaching the hospital bed. She had been through so much and he hadnât been there to protect her. Reece sat down on the visitorâs chair and reached for Charlotteâs hand. Every fiber of his body ached to touch her. Her hand felt cool and clammy. A tear slid down his left cheek and he swiped it away. Her recovery depended on his strength.
Charlotteâs sunken, dark-rimmed eyes opened slowly and widened when she saw him. âReece!â Her weak voice sounded like a small childâs behind the oxygen mask.
He put on a brave face and smiled. âHello sweetheart. You donât know how good it is to have you back.â His heart thumped as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
Tears slid from the corners of her eyes and Reece was on his feet scooping her gently into his arms, holding her close. It shocked him when he wrapped his arms around her. Charlotte was normally of slight build, but he could feel the bones beneath her skin. She was much frailer than she first appeared.
âI... never thought... Iâd see you again,â she told him, more tears sliding down her face. âI thought I was going to die.â
âYouâre safe now, sweetheart. All you have to do is concentrate on getting well.â He held her close willing all the strength he had to penetrate her weak frame and help her recover quickly. He eased himself out of her embrace. Heâd wanted to place her engagement ring back on her finger but would have to wait until she gained more weight. Those threatening tears continued to sting the backs of his eyes and he blinked them away.
Charlotte reached up and touched his unshaven face. âI love you,â her voice was a whisper. âI never thought Iâd get to say those words to you again.â
He took her hand in his and kissed the palm. âI love you too, my darling.â
âHow long have I been gone?â
âSeveral days. It felt much longer though.
