The moon shone, big and bright, over Almedalen that night. The night felt eerily still, the air crisp and biting. Not a soul was out, and the wind had died down hours earlier. Even the ducks were quiet. Only the sound of waves softly crashing against the shore in the distance interrupted the stillness as we stood by the city wall next to Almedalen.

I huddled into my coat and hid my face in my scarf. My nose had already started going numb.

Next to me, Tilda coughed into her own scarf. “Can someone please remind me why we live in Sweden? I’ve heard Spain is a really nice place to live.”

Mom snorted. “And how are those Spanish lessons coming along?”

Tilda gave her a dark look. “They are going just fine, thanks for asking. I haven’t failed the class yet, have I?”

“No, you haven’t.” Mom laughed and gave Tilda a sideways hug. “I’m proud of you. Learning a new language is hard.”

“Exactly!”

I rubbed my hands together, smiling a little to myself. The smile quickly faded, though, when I spotted a group of people in the distance, heading towards us. The coven. My stomach clenched and I rubbed my hands faster, harder. Silence descended as we waited for them to reach us.

As they got closer, I recognised Melinda in the middle, dressed in dark jeans and a heavy coat. To her right were two older women, maybe around their fifties. The one next to Melinda had hair so light grey it was almost white, while the other woman had darker hair, black streaked with lighter grey. They wore all black, and even had witchy cloaks, because of course. To Melinda’s right were a younger pair, a man and a woman holding hands. They both looked stereotypically Swedish with blond hair and bright eyes, though I couldn’t tell what colour they were in the darkness of the night. They wore muted colours, the kind you’d expect to see on anyone in town. If you were looking for magic-users, they were the last people you’d ever suspect. The older women, on the other hand, you’d definitely point out in a crowd.

They finally reached us, and Melinda smiled. “I am so glad you wanted to meet with us.” She looked over at my mom and Tilda. “This must be your family?”

I nodded, and they introduced themselves.

“It’s so nice to meet you.” Melinda’s eyes seemed to twinkle in the moonlight. “I’m Melinda, and these are Maria and Lena,” she pointed to the older women to her right, “and Emma and Filip.” She pointed to the younger couple. “We call ourselves a coven, but it’s not as witchy as it sounds, I promise.” She chuckled.

Emma grinned. “Well, it’s a little witchy.”

Melinda shot her a look, but she smiled. “Okay, it’s a little witchy. But mostly, it’s a community for people with magic. It’s a safe space where we can practise our magic without fear, a place where we can talk about it with others like us. It’s a chance to learn from each other.
