Chapter 10
For the life of me, I couldnât find a reason for Emily to purposely throw me off questioning Rena. Emily had been the one pushing me to investigate Connerâs death. She wanted to solve the next murder as much as Fiona and I did.
So, if she wasnât trying to throw us off, why was Julie teaching grade two relevant to Connerâs demise? To give Emily the benefit of the doubt, I played along.
âMillie sounds adorable,â I said. âAnd a class full of . . . Are they six in grade two? Seven? Must keep you busy, Julie.â
âYou have no idea. But I wouldnât have it any other way. I love teaching.â
âMillie is a brilliant little soccer player, too.â Emily said. âYou call it soccer here, isnât that right? We do, too, in New Zealand. Sheâs already scored half a dozen goals this season. She takes after her big brother, Ryder, for sure. We donât think heâs as academically strong as Millie, but academics arenât everything.â
The room went quiet. I waited to see where Emily was going with this.
Julie cleared her throat. âAs an educator, I believe academics are pretty important, but I think I understand what youâre trying to say.â She shot Emily a half smile before turning to me. âAddie, you mentioned on the phone that Fiona is looking for some furniture. Youâve come to the right place. Rena has a garage full.â
Fionaâs head was cocked, her eyes narrowed on Emily. She turned her attention to Rena. âYou probably donât want people traipsing through your garage. I can wait until youâve got a store.â
âI donât know when thatâs going to happen,â Rena said. âThere arenât any properties available at the moment for a store. I just lost a bid on The Seashell Haven. So, for now, Iâm using my garage as a temporary antique stop.â
âOh, that was you,â I said, feeling sheepish about having to admit Iâd won out over Rena, adding injury to her tragic loss, but sheâd soon find out. Then it would be odd that Iâd said nothing. âIâm the new owner of that property. I understand your frustration. Iâve been trying to find a place for my business for nearly a year. My friend Raquel started putting feelers out even before I moved back home.â
Rena frowned. âI see. I thought Iâd bid quite high.â When she mentioned the dollar amount of her offer, I was confused. It was fifteen-thousand dollars higher than my offer. So Raymond had accepted my bid even though it was less than Renaâs. Why? Had I really made that much of an impression on him?
An uncomfortable feeling swirled in my stomach. Killianâs words came back to me. There hasnât been a cursed witch in anyoneâs lifetime. No record of anyone having broken a curse. Youâre the only one we know of whoâs taken steps to do so. You could unlock hidden abilities along the way. We donât know what thatâs going to look like. Everyoneâs watching you, Adelaide.
Had I somehow magically influenced Raymond to take my offer?
Rena stood.
