Chapter 10

For the life of me, I couldn’t find a reason for Emily to purposely throw me off questioning Rena. Emily had been the one pushing me to investigate Conner’s death. She wanted to solve the next murder as much as Fiona and I did.

So, if she wasn’t trying to throw us off, why was Julie teaching grade two relevant to Conner’s demise? To give Emily the benefit of the doubt, I played along.

“Millie sounds adorable,” I said. “And a class full of . . . Are they six in grade two? Seven? Must keep you busy, Julie.”

“You have no idea. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love teaching.”

“Millie is a brilliant little soccer player, too.” Emily said. “You call it soccer here, isn’t that right? We do, too, in New Zealand. She’s already scored half a dozen goals this season. She takes after her big brother, Ryder, for sure. We don’t think he’s as academically strong as Millie, but academics aren’t everything.”

The room went quiet. I waited to see where Emily was going with this.

Julie cleared her throat. “As an educator, I believe academics are pretty important, but I think I understand what you’re trying to say.” She shot Emily a half smile before turning to me. “Addie, you mentioned on the phone that Fiona is looking for some furniture. You’ve come to the right place. Rena has a garage full.”

Fiona’s head was cocked, her eyes narrowed on Emily. She turned her attention to Rena. “You probably don’t want people traipsing through your garage. I can wait until you’ve got a store.”

“I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” Rena said. “There aren’t any properties available at the moment for a store. I just lost a bid on The Seashell Haven. So, for now, I’m using my garage as a temporary antique stop.”

“Oh, that was you,” I said, feeling sheepish about having to admit I’d won out over Rena, adding injury to her tragic loss, but she’d soon find out. Then it would be odd that I’d said nothing. “I’m the new owner of that property. I understand your frustration. I’ve been trying to find a place for my business for nearly a year. My friend Raquel started putting feelers out even before I moved back home.”

Rena frowned. “I see. I thought I’d bid quite high.” When she mentioned the dollar amount of her offer, I was confused. It was fifteen-thousand dollars higher than my offer. So Raymond had accepted my bid even though it was less than Rena’s. Why? Had I really made that much of an impression on him?

An uncomfortable feeling swirled in my stomach. Killian’s words came back to me. There hasn’t been a cursed witch in anyone’s lifetime. No record of anyone having broken a curse. You’re the only one we know of who’s taken steps to do so. You could unlock hidden abilities along the way. We don’t know what that’s going to look like. Everyone’s watching you, Adelaide.

Had I somehow magically influenced Raymond to take my offer?

Rena stood.
