“Got you something, queen.”

Olivia glanced up sharply from her phone as Cedric settled on the park bench beside her.

“Ced, I told you I’m back on my diet,” Olivia chuckled as he handed her an order of mozzarella sticks.

He curled his bottom lip and blinked his big blue eyes. “Aw, come on.” He waved the food under her nose. “You know you want some.”

Olivia rolled her eyes and took the bag. “All right, all right. Quit with those eyes.”

Cedric laughed. “Hey, gotta use what I have.” He shook his honey-blond hair out of his eyes. “I just want you to eat. That’s all.”

“You act like I’m wasting away,” Olivia snarked. She took a bite of one of the cheese sticks, then closed her eyes in delight. “Dang, these are good.”

“Knew you’d eat them.” Cedric gave her a smug grin.

Olivia shoved his shoulder.

“So, what did you bring me out here for, other than to con me into bringing you food?” Cedric asked.

Olivia paused, about to take another bite. “Okay. First of all, I never asked you to bring food. You did that on your own, Prince Charming.”

Cedric smiled sheepishly. “You got me there.” He leaned closer and arched an eyebrow. “You really think I’m Prince Charming?”

Olivia fought down the heat in her cheeks and rolled her eyes. “You wish.”

He grinned. “You’re blushing.”

“Am not!” Olivia swatted him. “Quit that!”

“You know I see past that whole mean girl charade.” Cedric pierced her with those blue eyes, then got serious. “What’s on your mind, Jess?”

As always, Olivia’s stomach twisted as he used her agent name. Whatever chemistry or camaraderie she and Cedric had, it was with Jessica. Not with her.

She gulped down her pain with another bite of cheese stick and steadied her nerves. “Just wanted to hang out,” she muttered past a mouthful of food.

Cedric didn’t drop his gaze.

Olivia scoffed and arched an eyebrow. “Sheesh, would you quit staring? Creepy.”

Cedric snorted. “Okay.” He turned away from her, and Olivia could feel his emotions as he crossed his arms—confused and chaotic. “I just thought I could see the girl under all the sarcasm for once. Since we’re hanging out.”

Olivia froze, and her heart twisted. That part had been dominant for a long time, and it threw up wall after wall as she considered letting him know what was in her heart.

What did she know about him, anyway? Was he just another boy-crazy crush? Would he pretend to want to know the real her, then take what he wanted and vanish without a trace like everyone else?

There was something authentic and refreshing about Cedric. She could feel it in her intuition, and she could feel it in his emotions. Her new psionic ability had given her more insight into the people around her, for better or worse.

Still, she hugged her arms. He didn’t even know her real name. He had no clue about her past or her role as a Defender. If they were going to figure out how to complete their little club of snake fighters and defeat this grand enemy of chaos, they were going to need Cedric’s help.
