CHAPTER 8

Terrance and Rubia began working for the Langley’s that same day.

Robert sent word to Mrs. Marchbanks that the positions were filled and no additional candidates need apply.

Robert and Sophia both liked the fact that Terrance and Rubia were a couple. Somehow it felt like they were keeping everything in the family.

“Will we always make love when we hire new staff?” She sat up, grabbed her bloomers and donned them.

Robert chuckled as he buttoned his trousers. “Why?”

“Because we are liable to be overrun with servants if that is the case. I would make love to you all day, every day if I could.” Loving Robert was nothing like the act with Martin had been. Robert, as anxious as he was, made sure he wasn’t hurting her. And he didn’t, she was ready for him, long past ready for him.

He was in a good mood and this seemed as good a time as any to ask him about hosting a dinner party.

“Robert, I’d like to throw another dinner party, just a small one. We could have Amelia and Philip over and one of your single friends to pair with Angelina. What do you say?”

He cocked an eyebrow. “I say playing matchmaker will just get you into trouble.” He stood in front of the fireplace looking down at her sitting on the sofa.

Sofia stood and put her arms around his waist. “It’s just dinner and maybe bridge afterward. Say yes, please.”

His arms automatically encircled her. “You know I won’t always give in to you. This is just because we are newly married, and I want you to have a good impression.”

“Oh, I know, and I do. Thank you.” She stood on tip-toe and kissed his chin.

He bent his head and kissed her lips. “I do like kissing you, though. I think I might sacrifice all my single friends if kisses are my reward.”

“Oh, they are, and,” she whispered. “Tonight I’ll thank you even more.”

She watched his eyes grow dark and his nostrils flare.

“I’ll hold you to that,” he said. He leaned in and whispered, “I best let you go before I decide to have my way with you again right here and now.”

Sophia laughed happier than she’d been in a long time.

A week later, the night of the dinner party, Angelina stood before the mirror in her room. She was more nervous than she’d ever been in her life. Sophia was trying to help her find a match, but Angelina had already chosen her next husband. Robert. Her problem was how to get Sophia out of the way.

The thought of killing her sister was distasteful but how else was she to get Robert? And she deserved to have Robert. Hadn’t she put up with Martin, with the almost daily berating, when it should have been Sophia. But I stole him from her, said a little voice in her head. She didn’t know what he was like but neither did I. He hid it well…until he got what he wanted.

First she needed to get Robert to want her.
