Eight

Charity enjoyed the extra time with her parents on Sunday, but she couldn’t deny she was glad to get home to Guthrie the next day. She tried to tell herself it wasn’t because she wanted to see Luke Johnson so much as she wanted to find out what Luke wanted to talk to her father about—if she could. It wasn’t as if her papa took her in his confidence about those kinds of things. To him she would always be his little girl—even though he and her mother raised her to be a woman of strong character and to make her own decisions. He certainly wasn’t looking to her for advice on how to handle a reporter.

Still, Charity looked forward to seeing the handsome reporter once more. She felt an almost desperate desire to find out what kind of man Luke really was. Her conflicting feelings about him were wearing on her. She wanted to believe she could trust him not to hurt her father or anyone in her family. But it was difficult to do when he worked for a paper that seemed to be against everything her father believed in.

When they got to the office, Papa looked over her plans for Lizzy’s house while she waited nervously for his opinion. He went over each room, studying the layout closely.

“You’ve done a fine job, Charity. It’s as good as mine or Matt’s first plans. Lizzy and Edward are going to love it.”

“Thank you, Papa.”

“I mean what I say. You’ll be designing right alongside Matt or me one day soon, Charity. I’m real proud of you.”

“You’ve taught me everything I know, Papa.”

“Maybe. But you show a special talent on your own,” he said, giving her a hug.

Her heart swelled with happiness at his encouraging words.

“I’d best go see how Matt is coming on his plans.”

A while later, Charity looked over at Papa and Matt, studying the plans to a new building they were about to start work on downtown. They were in deep conversation, and she admired their ability to concentrate on the job at hand. Would that she could do the same, but her thoughts seemed to flit from one thing to another.

Happy as she was with her father’s approval, there were so many uncertainties in her life she couldn’t even sort them all out—much less resolve them. Uppermost in her mind was Luke. She didn’t want to think the worst of him. She wanted. . . Charity shook her head and pulled her ledger toward her. That was her problem. She wasn’t sure exactly what she wanted. All she really knew was her heart longed for something as never before, and it all seemed centered around Luke Johnson.

Luke half expected to see Charity show up with her father at the Capitol Café that afternoon, and when she didn’t, the way his heart plummeted told him he was more disappointed than he had a right to be. Still, he’d see her that evening, and this way he could ask her father whatever came to mind without worrying about how she would react.
