As the light faded into dusk, Jodathyn called a halt to their trek. From the river’s edge he had spied a lone tree stump. He resorted to climbing up the bank on all fours in order to reach it.

Sidling up to the stump, Jodathyn swept his hand through it to remove unwanted spiders from their make-shift bed. The stump was blackened and charred from where it had been burnt. But it would do them for the night. Wrapping his cloak about them, Jodathyn wedged himself into the stump. They sat cramped inside their shelter. Jodathyn’s chin rested on Carvelle’s head.

“Uncle, tell me about the apple tree,” Carvelle demanded.

Jodathyn cleared his throat, thinking of the rosy red apple in his pack. “In a faraway kingdom, long, long ago, there was a household where children were servants. The household was an unhappy one, but when the children were together, something magical happened …”

“What, Uncle?”

“Hush. As I was saying, something magical happened. No matter how dreary or difficult life was, when the children were together, they found happiness. These children went on many adventures together.”

“What did they do?”

“They stole coins and gave them to the poor.”

“They did not!”

“They paddled in a magic stream with healing waters. However, the most special adventure was climbing trees that sheltered them from all harm.”

“What do you mean, Uncle?”

“There was a special apple tree. When the children climbed it, the mean knights could not find them. They were always safe in the branches of that tree. One day, the children made a solemn promise. They didn’t have any special trinkets to make their sacred vows, so they went to the apple tree and asked her to give some apples.

Under her branches the children exchanged their apples and promised they would always be friends and look out for one another, no matter what might happen.”

“That’s a nice story.”

Jodathyn hummed.

“It was about you and Ruevyn, wasn’t it? Did they hit him with the dog whips too? Does he have a scar just like yours?”

Jodathyn sucked in a deep breath as if he had been struck.

Carvelle was already onto his next question. “Did the stream really have magical healing properties?”

“It did.”

Carvelle cuddled in closer to Jodathyn’s chest. It seemed that all the exercise, jumping rock to rock, had worn the Prince out. Soon his gentle breathing became shallow as he drifted off to sleep.

Staring up into the night sky, Jodathyn tightened his grip around Carvelle. The sky rumbled, and then it began to rain.
