Chapter 8

We both woke up feeling like the Macy’s Day Parade had marched into our skulls. My mouth was dry. My body was still sheathed in a booze-fueled numbness. I didn’t get sick, but I kind of wished that I had.

Katie got sick. Then she crashed again.

Now the difference between being hung over when you’re just a couple versus a parent is that your kid doesn’t really have enough sympathy to let you sleep. Mya came charging in at some ungodly hour—that turned out to be just before 9. I was pretty sure that I’d had less to drink than Katie, so I dragged myself out of bed to make our daughter oatmeal and bacon.

Things got better with coffee—doesn’t everything? My body still ached and I still couldn’t clear all the cobwebs, but I started to remember what we’d done last night. Not that that made any more sense. Had we really done that? Had we had sex in front of another couple as they had sex? Seemed plausible in a dream-like way until I considered who my wife was. She abhorred strip clubs, pornography, and the idea of acting slutty. Had she really unzipped me? Had she whispered, I need you?

Katie came downstairs a couple hours later, looking better than she had a right to. Mya was watching Dora the Explorer and I was slumped over my third cup of coffee.

“Hey,” she said. “I had the craziest dream...” Katie said. She ran her hand through her hair and shook her head.

“Me, too.” We shared a laugh. “Did that really happen?”

Katie plopped down at the kitchen table and took a sip of my coffee. “I think so? I remember having dinner. Then dancing. Then...”

“Yeah,” I said. I reached out and covered her hand, squeezing her fingers. “Then the limo.”

Katie looked down at our entwined hands. Her eyes cut back up at me through her long lashes. “That was hot.”

“Yeah.” And Katie telling me she felt that way was even hotter. “I couldn’t believe it when you unzipped me.”

“I did?” She looked up and away, as if trying to remember. Her faint smile told me that she did. “God, I’m sorry.”

“Why? Don’t apologize. It was incredible.”

“I was so horny. I couldn’t stop myself. It was like I was possessed or something.”

“You should get possessed more often,” I said. “So we’re good?”

“I wouldn’t use that word, but yeah, I’m okay with it.” Katie fingered my coffee mug as she organized her thoughts. “I still can’t believe...well, any of it. But I don’t regret it.”

“Chloe and Greg are pretty wild, huh?”

She said, “Now there’s an understatement.”

“Do we like them?”

“Yes, I think we do. There’s something dangerous about them, but—”

I finished for her. “But maybe that’s what’s so exciting about them.” Katie nodded. “Do you think Greg’s attractive?”

Her admission was only a little hesitant. “Yeah, but if this is going where I think it is...” She took a deep breath. “I don’t think I’m ready to try, you know, swinging or anything.” Her face was as bright as her hair.
