Chapter 8

Annie

Of all the places Meg could have proposed for an actual, real, first date, this one wasn’t exactly conducive to talking. Annie narrowed her eyes and glanced around the dingy bar.

They were in New Jersey of all places. Jersey.

Annie sliced Meg a glance and was rewarded with a feline smile. “You hate it.”

“No, no. It’s just...” Annie flailed her hands at the dark brick walls, covered with flyers for what she guessed were bands. “It’s so nineties.”

“And I thought you liked that sort of thing.” Oh yes, that was definitely a mischievous grin lighting Meg’s eyes.

“Yeah, in a clean, fabulous atmosphere. But this?” Annie flapped even more vehemently, purse bobbing up and down on her wrist.

Meg chuckled and moved close enough to nudge her. “Trust me. You’ll learn to appreciate this place. It seems like we’re cursed every time we meet up at a restaurant or bar in the city, so I thought we’d get out of there. The guy who owns this place makes the most delicious food imaginable.”

Annie pursed her lips and gestured around the bar, unable to keep the disbelief out of her voice. “You know the owner?”

“Of course. You don’t have the monopoly on relationships with business owners, you know. I come here every Friday night. It gets me a little closer to home and to what I want to be when I grow up.”

“Which is?”

“Still up in the air, I admit.” Meg steered Annie toward a booth with bright, orange seats and a Formica table. Not exactly cafeteria chic, but she could pretend. A glance around the establishment didn’t give her much hope, even though there was a band setting up on a slightly raised dais on the other side of the bar.

Meg flashed her a smile and scampered off. Annie had to crane her neck to watch her lean over the bar and say something to the woman behind it. When Meg returned, she had two beers in hand.

“Jackie’s making us some burgers. They’re amazing, trust me. She and Jake are twins, and they inherited this place from their dad after he died. It’s been around for years.”

“Oh yes, I can tell.” Annie tried not to allow any bitterness creep into her voice, but she knew it was there. Sarcasm edging out the pleasure she ought to feel at Meg finally deciding to go on a real date with her.

Meg didn’t look at all perturbed, her features as soft and relaxed as usual. “How have you been? Is the anniversary party coming along?”

“It’s getting there. I kind of hoped...” Annie wiggled in the booth until the cushioned seat made an embarrassing sound. Gritting her teeth, she stilled and continued, “I hoped we’d work together on it. I could use another person’s feedback on everything I’m planning. Especially from someone who works closely with Kelsey.”

A server arrived to deliver their burgers and Annie looked at the dish. She wasn’t much for greasy food and the idea of even trying it made her entire body tense up.
