Chapter 14

Don wants the weekend to be perfect. He hopes taking the woman he loves to the dream house he built for someone else isn’t a mistake. Driving down the familiar road to the beach house brought back a flood of memories. The last time he was at the beach house, it was a disaster. Sitting in the driveway, he places his hands over his face, trying to push the bad memories out of his mind. He gets out of the car jogging up the few steps to the front door, placing the key in the door. Walking through the door, he is hit with the memory of the last time he was in the house.

A year ago, he stood in the very place watching a manipulative, conniving woman walk out the door. Every time he thought about Cindy, his heart felt like it was being ripped out of his chest. Still, to this day, he couldn’t believe he had fallen for her trickery. She had never loved him; he wasn’t even sure if she even cared about him. She only wanted to be with him to further her career and because she thought he came from money. He also didn’t know she had a boyfriend. How did he miss those signs? He was the sap who let her into his heart, even when people told him she was no good for him. When she found out he had taken every penny he owned and sunk it in this house, she went ballistic.

This time the circumstances are much different. The woman he is bringing to his home loves him. At least, he thinks she loves him. He is a man on a mission, to create beautiful new memories with her this weekend. He walks through the foyer into the kitchen, checking to make sure nothing from his past relationship was still around. He didn’t want to take any chances. He grabs a large trash bag walking into the bedroom they had shared together. Taking a deep breath, he hesitantly stands in the doorway looking at the bed. They had some good times too. It wasn’t all bad, he thought, looking at the sheets on the bed. He had left the bedroom the same way it had been the last time they were together. The sheets were still in a crumpled heap at the foot of his bed. After she left him, he had left the house to live in the barracks until his next assignment.

He pulls the sheets off of the bed, smelling her scent as he wrapped the sheets and blankets up in a ball. Reaching over, he unlocks the window, lifting it up to let in some fresh air. Thankfully, he came a day early; he is going to need to air out the whole house. Both the scents and the memories all needed to go. He didn’t want any trace of Cindy to be left behind when he was at the beginning of something new. As he cleans the house, opening the drapes and windows, he thinks it was a bad idea to bring Jenna here.
