Elsa interrupted the man in the gray suit as soon as he paused to ask me how my mother was doing. “He doesn’t understand what you’re saying,” she said in Amharic. “He never learned the language.”

The man let go of my hand and leaned back as if he needed to see me again from a different angle. “That’s a shame,” he said. “Very sad. You are sure? He doesn’t understand anything?”

Elsa shook her head. “That’s what his mother wanted.”

She turned her attention back to me and waited until my eyes locked on hers. “Isn’t that right, Mamush?” she added in English. “You don’t understand anything we say in Amharic.”

I smiled, just as I had always done when she said that.

“Unfortunately, not a word,” I told her.
