The Sydney Customs mooring is very convenient

I could see that the top batten had broken and was sticking through the mainsail. I had made it of Perspex in order to increase the bend in the sail at the top. Bad idea. Another patching job. With 200 miles to go and 62 litres of fuel I was well within diesel range if there was no wind.

The last day before Sydney was nice sailing. Why is it not always so?

I spoke to Australian Customs on the VHF and arranged for clearance and practique at 4pm on the 20th. They have moorings conveniently located for yachts just inside the entrance and I arrived almost on time but then had to wait for two hours for the immigration man. He charged me A$132 to issue my clean bill of health and comforted me by telling me that it is double at the weekends. The Customs people were as helpful as they could be and tried to raise Rushcutters Bay Marina for me without success. No one answered.

I had called my son-in-law, Brian, on the cellphone as soon as we were in range and then spoke to him several times during the wait. He had rushed in to Rushcutters Bay early and had a long wait before I turned up there. Since I had not booked in, having been told a year earlier that they would look after me, it was quite a relief to be allowed to stay at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Rushcutters Bay. They really had some difficulty in giving me a berth and simply could not when a regatta started on Feb1st.
