Chapter Two

The feast Titania threw in Dis’s honor seemed far too grand and too friendly. Not that he was opposed to the idea of friends, but he had almost no practical experience with them. But Adelaster had taken it upon herself to declare him her friend and that seemed to incline the rest of her circle into getting to know him. The fact that he was a changeling was interesting, but no cause for condemnation—all of them had known changelings before. Oberon’s emissary was generally feared; having a changeling hold that position made him more welcome than ever because no one thought he should even exist.

They ate outside, at long tables stretched across a green meadow dotted here and there with blue and red flowers. There was very little meat to be had, which Dis didn’t mind at all, and the dishes that were presented were still rich and sweet and delicious, like ripe berries in cream and nuts roasted in honey and lavender. There was so much more, and it was all shared so peaceably, that Dis reached beneath the table and pinched the inside of his thigh several times just to make sure he wasn’t still dreaming.

Not everyone came to talk to him. There were those fae, most of them older, who wouldn’t look at him. Dis supposed it was inevitable that the bad blood between the courts went beyond Oberon and Titania, and in truth, the disdain was more a comforting slice of normality for him than a source of consternation. Dis spoke politely with whomever approached him and didn’t bother to reach out to those who ignored him.

Once the feast was drawing to a close, Titania stood from her position at the head of the longest table. When she spoke, her soft voice immediately quelled all other conversation. “Tonight,” she began, “we welcome the emissary of the Winter Court, as we have done since the schism that divided us so long ago. In all those many years, never have we been graced with the presence of a changeling, whom so many of us believed could not survive in the land of snow and ice. But Dis’s presence here among us now has proven that even the coldest of hearts are capable of change, and because of that, I have hope in my heart for the first time since our people’s separation. It is clear to me now that the impossible is not truly impossible—improbable, yes, but I am still willing to test it. And so I tell you now, my Seelie of the Summer Court, that I plan to accept my lord Oberon’s gift this Solstice.”

Clearly no one had been expecting this news from Titania, if the anxious looks and rising murmurs were anything to go by. She continued despite the noise. “If anyone wishes to take umbrage with my decision, know that I will hear you, but I doubt I will be swayed. We have been frozen by our own memories for too long, and if we are to move forward, we must do so together.
