Back on the beach on Maria Island, Andrew’s face is a picture of concentration as he composes his text messages. Then the phone rings. Hello? Oh Paul, how are ya? Listens. Oh, that’s good. Wry smile. I made a very tough decision. Listens . . . clears his throat. Well, I’m actually pretty comfortable that I did make the right one. He goes on to explain the issues he had, then listens for a long while. Paul can talk!

Yeah. Heavy sigh. Well, I don’t feel great about it, ’cause there’s a lot of people put a lot of effort into it . . . He listens to Paul again for a while and laughs . . . Fucking oath it was rough! Yeah, it was. Oh, the biggest wave that hit was actually as I was coming back towards the mainland, and I was in the tube, and the whole thing broke on top of me. Yeah, no shit! And I gotta say, I thought that one was gonna throw me over. Listens. Well, I think the bubble actually helped, you know, because, I mean it’s hard to tell because . . . I probably should have done this but I haven’t. I haven’t actually tried capsizing in the upright position with the bubble on top, but I think what happened was that I did get thrown, but because it’s full of air and it takes time for that air to get expelled, it can’t fill up really quick. I tell you what, tying it down properly was a good move, though.

He laughs loudly as Paul asks whether he’s thinking of giving it another go. Well, it’s already crossing my mind, but this is something that needs to be discussed with my wife because she’s suffered a bit through this. She’s been a nervous wreck.
