Early the next morning, I caught up with Raven as she hurried from our yacht on a path through palm trees outside Magdelena’s orange gingerbread monstrosity. “May I walk with you?”

“I have no time to dally,” she said. “The doctor’s beginning right away.”

“You think that was Hitler last night?”

“Some people did.” She touched the cuff of my shirt, admitting, “I did. I was scared to death.”

“So was Dietrich.”

She drew me toward her by my wrist. For the briefest of moments, I watched her consider the possibility before dismissing it. She put her arms around my neck, speaking into my chest, “Forget about Dietrich, Axel. Find yourself by yourself, not through him.”

I felt her against me, a flash of comfort and excitement. And suddenly it wasn’t about Dietrich. It was about her arms around me and mine around her. “For what it’s worth, Luba, I’m still here.”

She looked away, mumbled. “You were a little boy when you slept with me. You cried and shivered, and I held you. You were my only friend in the world. The world burned and bled, and we held each other. I imagined your breaths were palm trees fanning me on a tropical island, warm and sweet. It was a terrible time, but we had each other. Now we avoid each other, which is as it should be. Try to leave me alone. Let me forget. Remembering only makes me lonelier. Your friendship only makes it worse.” Her face hardened. “And don’t call me Luba.”

I could feel the knot of my sex unwind and press into the hollow of her crotch. I could feel her press against me. “I want to kiss your eyelids.”

“I know.”

“I will never leave you, Luba. Never.”

“We were good friends, Axel. And now we are not.” She drew away but only slightly.

“But you come to me when you’re scared.”

“I go to Dietrich when I’m scared. I come to you when I’m scared of Dietrich.”

Footsteps approached, crunching in the loose stones of the path. Willi stood beside us.

“Little accident here?”

“Remind me, Willi, never again to wear high heels on these stones. Thank goodness Axel was passing. Stupid. And now I’m late for surgery.” She leaned on Willi, took off her shoes and tossed both of them into the river.
