CHAPTER XI

FREDDIE BATHURST'S SNAKE PIT

"Good Lord, it's Miss Lily! Did Mrs. Jakes throw you out for

being too naughty and showing up the other girls?"

Lily sat demurely on a sofa in an elegant Mayfair drawing room,

having been shown there by a perfectly respectable looking

housemaid. She removed the long silver pin from her hat and smiled,

looking up at the short, rather plump young man who stood before

her.

"I've been rather silly, Freddie. I really should have come to you

before. I would prefer not to say why I left Mrs. Jakes but I can

assure you it was for a very good reason."

Freddie Bathurst nodded agreeably but Lily caught the sharp

expression in his pale blue eyes.

"Well, it's a young lady's prerogative to change her mind. I

suppose you've heard about my own little den of iniquity?"

"Yes, and I'm very interested in seeing what you do, Freddie. You

see, I do need to find a new position."

Quickly, Lily told him about her brief sojourn at Akenhead Hall

and Freddie laughed until his eyes filled with tears.

"Lily Warnock as a housemaid! What a hoot! I'd have caned you

black and blue too, my girl. No, you stick to what you do best –

pleasuring men. I'd be more than delighted to have you on my staff.

As it were. We must find you a prettier frock, though. I've never seen

you so dowdy."

A surge of relief flooded through Lily. She unfastened her coat and

patted the brocade cushions of the sofa, bidding Freddie to join her.

He sat down and pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply and

hungrily until she gasped for air.

"That's my girl. Passion personified. Now – to the cellar!"

Taking her hand, Freddie touched a gilt-edged panel on the drawing

room wall and opened a small door.

"Mind your head."
