With yarn doubled and using the Double Start method (page 42), CO 76 sts. Cut off one end of yarn and cont with a single strand. Arrange sts so there are 24 sts on Needle 1, 29 sts on Needle 2, and 23 sts on Needle 3. Place marker (pm) and join for working in rnds, being careful not to twist sts. Rnd begins at back of leg. Purl 1 rnd.

NEXT RND: On Needle 1, [k1, p1] 6 times, k1, p2, k2, p2, k5; on Needle 2, work Rnd 1 of Knot chart over 29 sts; on Needle 3, k5, p2, k2, p2, [k1, p1] 6 times.

Working sts on Needle 1 and Needle 3 as they appear (knit the knits and purl the purls), work sts on Needle 2 according to Rnds 2–20 of chart once, rep Rnds 1–20 three times, then work Rnds 1–17 once more.

NEXT RND: (Rnd 18 of chart) On Needle 1 and Needle 2, work in established patt; on Needle 3, knit the first 5 sts, sl these 5 sts onto the end of Needle 2, and leave the rem 18 sts unworked—98 chart rnds total; piece measures about 8½" (21.5 cm) from CO.
