A mere twenty years ago I was trying to understand email. Recently the CEO of Apple Computer, Steve Jobs, passed away. He was the brain trust behind the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. Once upon a time I thought that the amount of change that my grandmother saw, having been born at the end of the 1800s and living through most of the twentieth century, living before there were cars, and then seeing humans land on the moonâI thought no generation could witness more change. Iâm not so sure now. With computerization and biotechnology, our imagination is still challenged.
As much as we have reason to anticipate that new technological developments will ever be before us, like cars and email and iPads, we have more reason to embrace the deep storyline of hope in the Scriptures, anticipating profound and hopeful developments. I am quite aware that when a writer makes reference to current historical trends, that those specific trends may prove in the light of years not to have matured. There are, however, trends occurring in the Middle East during the writing of this book that appear remarkable. Persons who have been in power for decades are no longer in power. A generation that has been under thumb is witnessing hope for a new day. These events illustrate the potency of hope.
I read an early draft of Brother Andrewâs book Light Force: A Stirring Account of the Church Caught in the Middle East Crossfire. He met with Muslim leaders, bringing trust into settings of mistrust. I read Ted Dekker and Carl Medearisâ book Tea With Hezbollah: Sitting at the Enemiesâ Table, Our Journey through the Middle East. They went to Islamic leaders and asked questions like: What makes you laugh? What makes you cry? Tell us about your children.
Stories in these books illustrate politically hopeful developments, in a similar way smartphones show hopeful developments technologically. The twenty-five Scriptures listed are selected to demonstrate the call to hopefulness. In the days of riding horses who could have imagined the car? In the days of the car, who could have imagined a rocket going to the moon? In the days of oppression, who could imagine freedom? In days of war, who can imagine peace? Who could imagine Godâs will being done on earth as it is in Heaven? The storyline of hope found in the Scriptures imagines life as it ought to be. These Scriptures are too powerful to ignore.
This storyline of hope in the Scriptures fuels our anticipation of Godâs preferred future. Just because email was hard for me to understand, did not mean that it was not possible. The storyline of email, on to iPods, to iPhones, and to iPads has opened us to expect developments that are not yet with us. Even more so, the storyline that God has promised to bless all the families of the earth, now with the coming of Jesus, opens us to expect developments that are not yet with us. What hope!
Itâs Christmas time as I conclude this chapter.
