Unacceptable Housing

Most of the time, the housing is in good areas close to the hospital at which you’ll be working; but remember, your recruiter and housing coordinator are generally not from the area you’re going to be working, so they don’t know. The only way they learn about good and bad apartment complexes and areas is from the travelers themselves. If you find that you are being housed in unsafe or unacceptable conditions, you must stand up for yourself. I’m not talking about an apartment that doesn’t have the pool or balcony you requested, but one that you feel puts you in danger in some way. I’m talking about drug arrests, murders, rapes, and similar crimes in the complex or in the surrounding area. This information can be found utilizing the search methods I detailed in the above paragraph before you even arrive at the location. Once you arrive, if you find your apartment without safety items like smoke detectors or a fire extinguisher, or you find pests or rodents:

1. Take pictures with date and time stamps for proof.

2. Go to the complex office, inform them of the problems, and share the proof. They should have someone deal with these issues within 24 hours.

3. Share the proof with your agency. If the problems are not corrected by the complex management within a reasonable amount of time, ask your agency to relocate you. They’ll either move you or light a fire under the complex management because they don’t want you not working (they don’t make money). If the agency won’t move you or pay for you to use an extended stay hotel while the problems are being fixed, or the problems are not being addressed by the complex management, and your living situation is genuinely unacceptable, then walk away from the job. Your safety is worth more than one assignment. Oh, and don’t forget to find a new agency to work with, not that you would forget after something like that. But don’t worry. I’ve rarely seen housing that was unacceptable, and I’ve never seen an agency refuse to relocate someone with proof of unacceptable conditions.
