Chapter 8

Thurs 16th Aug 2018

Pip was true to her word. Not only did she want me that night, but when I got home that evening after the game, our late dinner was like a replay of the night before. A beautifully cooked meal, a loving attentive wife and then off up to bed.

Only this time there were no guest visitors. Pip didn’t offer my inner demons the same choices as the night before. And if she had, I’d have turned them down. Who wants ice cream and steak every night of the week? No, what both Pip and I wanted and needed was special alone time. Husband and wife, friend and soul mate time.

We made love three times before sleep finally claimed us – a mix of gentle and loving and fast, urgent needy love.

Inevitably, there was a little talking in-between times.

“Where’s this all heading, honey?” Pip asked as she snuggled under my arm.

“Sweetheart, I honestly don’t know. But I know it feels a lot better than before. Before, it sometimes felt like we weren’t on the same page. Like we were pulling in opposite directions. Wanted different things. But now it feels different.”

Pip just smiled, kissed me on the cheek and burrowed a little deeper, a little closer. “I love you, Josh Butler.”

Friday just after lunch I got a text from Pip:

P: Tonight, slutty or sweet? P xxx

I felt myself start to shake at the implications.

The most important rule I’d set had been that Pip and Dav would be a one-time-only thing. Somehow this had become stretched over three nights. Partly because of my mixed feelings truncating each of the first two nights before they’d reached their promised end. Partly because of reasons I really still didn’t always want to be honest about.

But nonetheless, up until this point, I could just about tell myself Dav and Pip had been a one-time thing. Limited and constrained. Not a show that would run and run.

But Pip’s text – ‘slutty or sweet’ – left me staring down both barrels of a decision that would explode this myth I happily told myself. If I said ‘slutty’ I’d clearly be smashing the glass ceiling of the notion that Pip and Dav was one and done. I’d be opening both doors wide, standing between them, and looking at the horizon without any idea how far into the distance the two of them would walk towards that horizon. How many times they’d be together in the next few weeks before he left Houston.

I was physically shaking as I faced this moment of truth. I’d gotten to the point of being more comfortable with them. Less threatened by what they had, by what Dav gave her that I couldn’t. But this was the next step. Pip’s three-word question asking me if I wanted them to continue. Asking me if I wanted to put aside the most important rule I’d laid down.

I knew in my heart what I wanted to do. I knew the risks. I knew the significance.
